United Technologies Building & Industrial Systems Advocates Smart Buildings Solutions at Green Building Conference

UTC Building & Industrial Systems, the world's largest provider of building technologies, including its industry-leading brands such as Carrier, Otis and Chubb, demonstrated its innovative, intelligent solutions at the 10th International Conference on Green and Energy-Efficient Building & New Technologies and Products Expo (IGEBC). UTC Building & Industrial Systems also engaged with industry experts, scholars and government representatives regarding urbanization opportunities.

United Technologies has been a top sponsor of IGEBC for 10 years, supporting China’s green building and sustainable development initiatives. Geraud Darnis, president and CEO of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, shared his insights as a keynote speaker this year.

Darnis noted the scale and speed of China’s urbanization is unprecedented. As more people move into cities, urbanization brings opportunities for economic growth as well as energy-saving and emissions-reduction initiatives, which Premier Li Keqiang recently outlined as the country’s top priorities. Addressing these opportunities, Darnis recognized that smarter and increasingly integrated green buildings are an important pillar for sustainable development.

“I am proud of the contributions made by our UTC Building & Industrial Systems brands to support China’s urbanization and the development of green buildings,” said Darnis. “As a founding member of the China Green Building Council, we have a legacy of encouraging smarter green building projects and we will continue to do so through our leading building technologies.”

China’s urban population is expected to reach the one-billion mark by 2030. As buildings are responsible for approximately 40 percent of global energy consumption, there is significant potential for energy saving and emission reduction by improving building energy efficiency.

“We are committed to continuing to innovate and pioneer energy-efficient products that make life better. Since 2000, Carrier’s high-efficiency products have avoided 141 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of removing 29 million cars from the road for one year,” added Darnis.

UTC Building & Industrial Systems’ building solutions benefit customers in China and all over the world, offering a wide range of sustainable products and services from leading brands. Carrier’s recent Shanghai International Finance Center heating, ventilation and air conditioning upgrade project led to a 40 percent improvement in chiller plant efficiency and returned annual savings of $1.2 million U.S. dollars. In addition, Otis is the first elevator maker in China to launch a product specifically designed for the country’s social housing market; the Gen2® Core is smaller and 75 percent more efficient than conventional roped elevators.

In addition to its innovative green products and services, UTC Building & Industrial Systems works closely with Chinese government organizations such as the Ministry of Housing, Rural and Urban Development, as well as the China Society of Urban Studies to promote the development of energy-efficient buildings. United Technologies’ support has helped initiate research on China’s eco-city development and sponsor the first China-U.S. City Designing Summit to promote urbanization and eco-city development. UTC Building & Industrial Systems also recently released Inclusivity and Sustainability: Placing People at the Heart of Urbanization at this year’s China Development Forum. This latest research paper shares best practices and suggestions based on global experiences and local demands.

“UTC Building & Industrial Systems is committed to sharing our expertise in green buildings with the fast-growing Chinese market, to support and grow with our customers, and to enable efficient use of energy, water and vertical space to drive the sustainable development of China’s urbanization,” said Darnis.
