Abbelen GmbH Selects Carrier Transicold's Vector™ 1550 City Units for Low Noise Operations

Abbelen GmbH, a producer and distributor of meat products headquartered in Tönisvorst, relies on Carrier's Vector 1550 City low-noise refrigeration units to help reduce noise emissions during peak delivery times to its supermarket customers. Carrier Transicold, which operates in Germany as Carrier Transicold Germany, helps improve global transport and shipping temperature-controlled cargoes with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Noise pollution is a growing concern across Europe, and supermarkets, in particular, have focused on reducing noise exposure from commercial vehicles during delivery. Piek standards, established in the Netherlands in 2003, stipulate that noise levels during night deliveries (from 10:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) must not surpass 60 decibels - the equivalent of normal conversation. Additionally, Germany has set high standards documented in the "Technische Anleitung Lärm" (TA Lärm), which state that a noise level of 45 decibels (dB) is not to be exceeded during the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in mixed commercial and residential areas. 

"Our commercial buildings are placed in an area with both commercial and residential buildings," said Anne Jende, coordinator of logistics and national fleet, Abbelen GmbH. "For us, a refrigeration unit's noise emissions is a major factor when making a purchasing decision."

During the development of a new complex at their facility, Abbelen had to ensure compliance with dB-levels during the loading and collection of deliveries as well as considering the noise from 17 trailers alongside five heavy goods vehicles. For this reason, Abbelen looked for a low-noise refrigeration unit and ordered five Piek-certified Vector 1550 City units. Generating a noise level below 60 decibels, the Vector 1550 City unit provides the advantages of the standard Vector 1550 unit and its E-Drive™ all-electric technology, including low fuel consumption, improved reliability and a light weight. 

"Loading during morning hours and running the trailer refrigeration units over the weekend to maintain perishable cargo integrity were two of the challenges we faced," said Jende. "The Vector 1550 City units are both quiet and efficient, helping us to solve both concerns."

Using the same mounting points and front wall opening as a standard trailer unit, the Vector 1550 City unit can be built into the trailer without additional expenditure. This is an advantage for customers, because they do not have to pay extra for the installation. The Vector 1550 City unit also has a remote function that is beneficial to truck operators.

"The refrigeration machine can be switched on and off without leaving the driver's cab," said Jende. "This is especially helpful in urban distribution."
