UTC Building & Industrial Systems' Middle East & Turkey regional headquarters in Dubai has achieved U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold® certification, making it the organization's fourth LEED-certified office. The 30,000 square-foot office on Sheikh Zayed Road is home to Carrier Middle East Ltd, Otis LLC, UTS Carrier LLC and Kidde Limited, all of which are part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
"Achieving LEED Gold certification underscores UTC Building & Industrial Systems' commitment to sustainability and green building both around the world and right here in the Middle East and Turkey," said Rolando Furlong, vice president, UTC Building & Industrial Systems, Middle East & Turkey. "Energy efficiency and sustainability starts with us. We can demonstrate the benefits first hand for our customers."
The office met LEED Gold criteria in a number of areas, including its site development, water and energy efficiency, indoor air quality and innovation. LEED certification provides independent verification of a building's green features and means healthier, more productive places with reduced stress on the environment.
The office uses a range of Carrier's high efficiency chilled water fan coil units, which are 34 percent more energy efficient and offer greater reliability and lower operating noise than current alternatives. The system was designed to comply with ASHRAE 62.1 for indoor air quality and ASHRAE 55-2004 for mechanically ventilated and conditioned spaces. The office also benefits from high efficiency light fittings in addition to motion and light sensors, which deliver a 30 percent reduction in lighting power use in comparison to standard light fittings and lights. The office uses Green Label carpeting, GREENGUARD furniture and ENERGY STAR® appliances. Potable water usage was also reduced by 38 percent in comparison to standard fittings.
Carrier was the first company to join the U.S. Green Building Council in 1993 and is the only company to be a founding member of green building councils on four continents.
"We believe that 'green products must start at a green company,' and we're proud to see the Dubai headquarters illustrate this commitment with the sustainable design and performance of its building," said John Mandyck, chief sustainability officer, UTC Building & Industrial Systems. "This outstanding achievement is reflective of our focus on sustainability and preserving natural resources as a guiding principle for everything we do."
