UTC Building & Industrial Systems Malaysia Inks Memorandum of Understanding with Ministry of Education Malaysia to Promote Engineering Graduate Employability

3-year programme to benefit TVET graduates

UTC Building & Industrial Systems Malaysia announced a talent development initiative, collaborating with the Ministry of Education Malaysia to enhance employability of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates. UTC Building & Industrial Systems is the world's largest provider of building technologies, and is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX)

UTC Building & Industrial Systems Malaysia inked a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry to provide industrial placements for students from higher learning institutions studying related disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building and services and facility management.

UTC Building & Industrial Systems is one of the first multinational corporations to support this talent development agenda under the recently-unveiled Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education). This programme will be open to all public universities, polytechnics, community colleges and vocational colleges.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Charles Lim, managing director, UTC Building & Industrial Systems, Malaysia and Brunei, said these graduates would be given the opportunity to receive technical exposure from the world's largest provider of building technologies, including elevators, escalators and air conditioning and fire security systems. According to Lim, the demand is set to grow for building technologies, given the urbanization rate in Malaysia.

"As more people move into cities, more buildings will be required," he said. "Therefore, we will need more specialised technical staff such as technicians, engineers and sales personnel to serve a greater client base. We look forward to developing new talent from Malaysia's technology polytechnic institutions, community colleges and vocational colleges."

At the signing ceremony, Y.Bhg. Dato' Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang, Secretary General II, Ministry of Education, expressed optimism that this will strengthen collaboration between academia and industry.

"I hope that this new collaboration will develop opportunities beyond internships," he said. "We want UTC Building & Industrial Systems Malaysia to be a part of designing and developing curriculum for programs in which they are experts in."

This MOU underscores the Ministry's goal to achieve at least 80 percent employability among Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates, a goal which is in line with the fourth shift of the Malaysia Education&Blueprint 2015 - 2025 (Higher Education). This fourth shift is aimed at providing skilled talent to meet the growing and changing demands of industry.
