UTC Building & Industrial Systems’ Green Shoots Program Grows Roots for Future Sustainability

UTC Building & Industrial Systems, the world's largest provider of building technologies and a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), planted new seeds for future sustainability as part of its Green Shoots program during a recent visit to Pat Heung Central Primary School. During the visit, held on 5 May 2014, nearly 40 employee volunteers taught students about the importance of environmental stewardship and healthy living habits.

“At UTC Building & Industrial Systems, we are focused on environmental protection and sustainability, as it concerns both our livelihoods and our current and future generations. Through Green Shoots we are walking the talk, encouraging young minds to think about sustainability at an early stage, so that they develop and maintain green habits as they grow older,” said Ryan Mai, vice president, UTC Building & Industrial Systems, Hong Kong.

As part of the visit, books, stationery, personal hygiene items and mosquito killers were donated to the school and students. The donation was organized to meet the needs of students while enhancing their awareness of personal hygiene. In addition, a Green Shoots certificate and a dictionary were awarded to each student. The visit ended with volunteers playing a game with students that focused on waste handling and sharing basic knowledge of sustainability.

“I believe that our school is a perfect partner for UTC Building & Industrial Systems because we emphasize the promotion of a green campus. We share the same mission of this program. I hope that through the program our students can learn more about environmental protection. The scholarship presented by UTC Building & Industrial Systems encourages and brings recognition to our students,” said Irene Lai, headmaster at Pat Heung Central Primary School.

Launched in 2011, the Green Shoots program engages employee volunteers to support primary education in rural communities in Asia. Since its launch, the program has benefited nearly 10,000 primary school students in 65 schools.
