Carrier Goes 'All In' at the 46th Annual NSBE Convention

Building upon its recently announced Diversity & Inclusion strategy, Carrier is actively working to develop a strong pipeline of diverse talent and signed on as a platinum-level member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Board of Corporate Affiliates and sponsor of the 46th annual convention, with the theme of “Engineering the Revolution.”

The Convention’s Opening Session kicked off on Aug. 19 with an exciting opening session including speakers like Dr. Karl Reid, NSBE Executive Director, Crystal Valentine, spoken word artist, and Austin Mamou, NSBE Convention Planning Committee Chair. Dave Gitlin, Carrier President & CEO, delivered the keynote address to approximately 8,500 virtual attendees. His passionate speech discussed the tragic killing of George Floyd, the outcry it created around the nation and how it impacted him personally.

“In today’s environment, it’s not enough to talk about your vision,” Gitlin said. “You have to make it real. You have to build. You have to create. You have to change. You have to act.”

Gitlin also highlighted Carrier’s new Diversity & Inclusion strategy, explaining the need to lean into reducing the gap by recruiting more diverse talent, developing and sponsoring current talent, incorporating development programs for employees as well as the importance of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs).

The second and third days of the NSBE Convention included a Career Fair, with more than 150 organizations participating. Carrier Human Resources professionals focused on introducing virtual attendees to the company and recruiting engineering talent.

This convention is one of the most effective recruiting events to meet and hire diverse talent. Carrier had more than 60 talent acquisition professionals and hiring managers actively recruiting at the event, who were meeting with potential candidates and extending offers to future Carrier engineers. Additionally, Carrier hosted live, virtual Meetup panels featuring current Carrier employees discussing topics such as “The Power to Belong,” “Early Career Programs at Carrier” and “Meet Carrier.”

“The NSBE National convention is a critical enabler in our efforts to hire talent and increase diversity among the Carrier workforce,” said Thomas Simonet, Vice President, Talent, Diversity & Inclusion, Carrier. “It provides us with an impactful outreach to the Black engineering community looking for career opportunities. It gives us a platform to promote who we are and what we stand for: respect, integrity, inclusion, innovation and excellence.”
