Susan N. Story

Former President and Chief Executive Officer, American Water Works Company, Inc.

Ms. Story served as the President and Chief Executive Officer and a director of American Water Works Company, Inc. (water and wastewater utility) from 2014 until 2020. She joined American Water as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in 2013. Prior to joining American Water, Ms. Story served as Executive Vice President of Southern Company (gas and electric utility holding company), and in other executive positions with subsidiaries of Southern Company, including President and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Company Services from 2011 to 2013, and President and Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Power Company (electric utility) from 2003 to 2010. During her service as a public company director and as a public utility executive, Ms. Story has been responsible for the implementation of significant sustainability and ESG initiatives and for oversight of cybersecurity risks and mitigation measures, including extensive coordination and active scenario exercises with regulatory officials of multiple governmental agencies involving critical infrastructure. 

Ms. Story is a director of Dominion Energy, Inc., where she serves on the Finance & Risk Oversight and Corporate Governance committees, and a director of Newmont Corporation, where she serves on the Audit committee. She was formerly a director of Raymond James Financial, Inc. from 2008 to 2023, where she served as lead independent director and on the Corporate Governance and ESG, and Capital Planning Committees. Ms. Story also serves on the Advisory Board of the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and is a Founding board member and advisor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Board Advisory Council. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University, and an MBA from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
